The Deutscher Fußball-Bund (DFB), Germany’s governing soccer federation, announced on Friday that the German women’s national team will face the United States on April 5, 2013 in Germany. That will precede a June 29 home match against World Cup champion Japan.
Both games are part of Germany’s preparation for the 2013 EURO tournament, a prize the Germans are desperate to claim after a shocking quarterfinal exit at the hands of Japan in the 2011 World Cup, a loss which also eliminated the Germans from the Olympics.
U.S. Soccer did not immediately confirm the match.
Germany will start the 2013 calendar with a tough road test against France, another EURO hopeful after finishing fourth at both the 2011 World Cup and the 2012 Olympics. France and Germany also face off on Nov. 29.
Germany will take part in the 2013 Algarve Cup in Portugal from March 6-13. The Algarve Cup is the most competitive annual friendly tournament in women’s soccer.
