Well there is a severe lack of Stateside women’s soccer matches, but many WPS players love watching Barcelona. Seriously. Just check out a few player Twitter feeds.
If you feel like waking up early, tune into Fox Soccer at 5:30 a.m. ET to see Barca take on Al-Sadd. Needless to say, Barcelona is seriously favored against Qatar’s top club. How favored is Barcelona? Well, let’s just say the latest betting football odds don’t give Al-Sadd much of a shot.
Barcelona is making its debut in the FIFA Club World Cup thanks to the system that clearly favors European teams. Barca is just five days removed from defeating Real Madrid in El Classico and currently sit atop La Liga. This FIFA Club World Cup is a shot at the third trophy this season having already won the European Super Cup and the Spanish Super Cup.
And who is Al-Sadd? Well, they hail from Doha and they defeated Tunisian side Esperance in the quarterfinals to get the right to challenge Barcelona in the semifinals.
Now if only there was a similar competition for women. I know it won’t happen anytime soon, unless we allow Dan Borislow to fulfill his dream of an international cup (which seriously would be totally awesome, but a complaint money pit).
We could have the Western New York Flash taking on Santos or Lyon playing INAC Kobe. Hey, Arsenal just played INAC Kobe, which would have been pretty cool to see. Maybe this can happen. Maybe…
WPS has bigger issues, however, as we have learned in the past three weeks.
