Notre Dame has been eliminated from the NCAA Division I women’s soccer tournament in the first round for the first time since 1993 following a 1-0 loss to Illinois on Sunday. The loss ends an uncharacteristically inconsistent season from the Fighting Irish (10-8-3) and guarantees there will be a new NCAA Division I champion in 2011.
Niki Read scored the game-winner for No. 16-ranked Illinois in the 50th minute. Illinois will face No. 2 seed Oklahoma State on Friday.
Last season Notre Dame went 21-2-2 en route to winning the national championship by way of a 1-0 victory over Stanford in the College Cup final.
Division I will not be the only one crowning a new champion. 2010 NCAA Division III champion Hardin-Simmons was eliminated by Trinity (Texas) in the second round on Sunday, falling 3-1. Hardin-Simmons upset Messiah in last year’s championship game, preventing Messiah from the three-peat. Trinity advances to play Ithaca on Friday.
2010 Division II champion Grand Valley State is the only remaining NCAA women’s team that can repeat as champion. Grand Valley State hosts Northern Kentucky on Friday.
