WPS announces year-end awards

WPS released the nominees for its 2011 year-end awards on Tuesday. The most interesting category will be the Michelle Akers Player of the Year Award. The vote for that should come down to Western New York Flash forward Christine Sinclair and Philadelphia Independence attacker Veronica Boquete. Below is the list of nominees. Who are you voting for? Who got snubbed?

2011 WPS YEAR-END AWARD NOMINATIONS (all nominations in alphabetical order)

MICHELLE AKERS PLAYER OF THE YEARAwarded to the player judged to have had the greatest impact on her team’s performance during the WPS regular season.

WPS DEFENDER OF THE YEARRecognizes a player with an outstanding ability to defend WPS’s best attacking players during the regular season.  The player must play a position that is considered to have key defensive responsibilities (defender or midfielder).  Goalkeepers are not eligible.
