Atlanta Beat goalkeeper Alli Lipsher has become the first player in WPS history to win back-to-back player of the week awards. After winning the award in Week 2 for a 1-0 win over Sky Blue FC in which Lipsher made 11 saves, she has again won the award in Week 3 while making 13 saves in a 2-2 draw with the Western New York Flash.
Lipsher produced some spectacular saves on Sunday, but as I said earlier in the week, midfielder Lori Chalupny is the player who changed the game in favor of Atlanta and helped earn the Beat that 2-2 draw with the Flash. Giovanni Albanese, Jr. made his case for Christine Sinclair and another goalkeeper, magicJacks’ Jillian Loyden.
Regardless, Lipsher has been stellar for Atlanta. Allison Whitworth’s opening day red card has turned into a blessing for Lipsher, who has clearly locked down the No. 1 spot for the time being.
