Boston Breakers 4-1 Atlanta Beat: Breakers kick-off season in dominating fashion

The Boston Breakers kicked-off the third season of Women’s Professional Soccer with an emphatic 4-1 win over the Atlanta Beat on Saturday at KSU Soccer Stadium.

Midfielder Jordan Angeli opened the scoring for Boston in the 18th minute before rookie midfielder Keelin Winters doubled the visitors’ lead in the 23rd minute.  A flat Atlanta team was left stunned by the two goals in five minutes, but the Breakers suffered a blow when an injury to Angeli forced Head Coach Tony DiCicco to make an early change.  Kelley O’Hara replaced Angeli, whose injury is yet unkown, in the 29th minute.  Boston took the 2-0 lead into halftime.

O’Hara got on the scoreboard in the 78th minute to give Boston a 3-0 lead, although Carli Lloyd finished a penalty in the 78th minute to get Atlanta back into the game, at least temporarily.

But any remaining doubt was put to rest in the 90th minute.  Atlanta goalkeeper Allison Whitworth was shown a red card in the 90th minute when she came out of her box and fouled O’Hara.  Boston defender Kasey Moore stepped up to the free kick from 20 yards out and buried the ball past Cat Whitehill, who stepped into goal for the ejected Whitworth.  That made it 4-1, which is how the game would end.

Boston (1-0-0, 3 pts.) opens its home schedule Sunday, April 17 at 6 p.m. against expansion team Western New York Flash.  Atlanta (0-1-0, 0 pts.) next hosts Sky Blue FC on Saturday, April 16 at 7 p.m.
