It was a busy weekend in WPS preseason action as the four WPS teams earned victories, while Sky Blue FC fell in the final of a historic tournament.
Sky Blue FC lost to LdB FC Malmö 1-0 in the Alanya International Women’s Tournament of Champions. Sarah Storck scored in the 12th minute to give the Swedish side the 1-0 advantage. Both teams blew several opportunities throughout the game, including Malmö being denied by the woodwork once in each half.
Sky Blue FC had advanced to the tournament final after defeating Fortuna Hjørring of Denmark on Thursday. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in regulation (Allie Long had the goal for Sky Blue FC) before going to a nine-round penalty kick shoot-out, which Sky Blue FC prevailed it.
The Atlanta Beat won twice over the weekend, defeating the University of North Carolina 2-0 on Saturday and Florida State University 1-0 on Sunday. On Saturday, the Beat’s Meghan Lenczyk and Megan Jesolva had finishes in the 16th and 80th minutes respectively to top North Carolina. Krista Larsen scored the game’s only goal on Sunday.
The Philadelphia Independence also won twice over the weekend, topping Duke 3-0 and UCONN 3-1. The Boston Breakers ended their Florida training camp with a 5-0 win over the University of Florida and the Western New York Flash defeated the Erie Admirals Boys U-17 team 7-2 on Saturday.
Idle this weekend was magicJack, which gave its players the weekend off before returning to training on Monday morning.
