United States Women’s National Team Head Coach Pia Sundhage has called in 31 players to the February training camp in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The training camp will take place from Feb. 3-9, after which the roster of 31 will be trimmed to 23 players ahead of the Algarve Cup in Portugal.
Sundhage has called in several young players including forward Sydney Leroux and midfielder Meghan Klingenberg, both of whom earned their first senior national team caps at the Four Nations tournament in China. The most notable young inclusion is former Virginia midfielder Sinead Farrelly, who was recently selected No. 2-overall by the Philadelphia Independence in the 2011 WPS Draft. Farrelly is making her first appearance in a U.S. Women’s National Team camp. Boston College’s Kristie Mewis has also been called into camp after training with the team in early January ahead of the Four Nations tournament.
All 21 players who participated in the Four Nations tournament have been called into the February training camp.
The U.S. will make its annual trip to Portugal in early March for the Algarve Cup, facing Japan on March 2, Finland on March 4 and Norway on March 7 in group play.
