FC Gold Pride has acquired 2009 WPS All-Star Camille Abily, the team announced Thursday.
The Pride will also obtain LA’s No. 20-overall pick in the 2010 WPS Draft. In return, the Sol will get Tina DiMartino (No. 3-overall draft selection in 2009) and the No. 14-overall pick. That gives LA the No. 5, 8, 9, 14 and 22-overall draft picks. Is this news shocking? Absolutely. Abily was integral to the Sol’s success in 2009. She proved to be a big part of the team’s pulse in the final regular season game against Boston, coming on as a halftime substitute.
However, this draft is notably much deeper than 2009. Moving Abily seems crazy, but DiMartino is a good young talent. Add her to four of the top 15 draft picks in the 2010 draft and you could just have a dynasty on your hands in LA. GM Charlie Naimo and Head Coach Abner Rogers can develop the country’s best talent for years to come. LA might not just be a great team now, but a dynasty in the making.Sol fans might be upset and neutrals may be questioning, but have faith in Naimo and Rogers.
And FC Gold Pride is now much more of a contender in 2010. Give the Pride credit for addressing its current problems while still having options for the future (FC Gold Pride still holds the No. 3 selection). In the end, this could be a great move for both teams. Also lost in this big trade was another trade that LA made, getting Boston’s third round draft pick (No. 25-overall). In exchange, Boston received LA’s No. 65 pick and the negotiating rights to Laura Del Rio, former FC Indiana star and currently with Frankfurt in Germany.
