Lloyd returns home, signs with Sky Blue FC
U.S. Women's National Team midfielder Carli Lloyd, a native of Delran, NJ, has signed with Sky Blue FC, the team announced Monday. The move comes after Lloyd spent a disappointing 2009 campaign with the Chicago Red Stars in which she registered two goals and one assist in 16 games with the squad.Lloyd, who played at Rutgers University from 2001-2004, is ready to move on from that and focus on being home."You never want to dwell too much on the past," she said. "It was very important to me to be home in this environment."On several occasions during Monday's announcement, Lloyd stressed the importance of being back with her personal trainer, James Galanis. Lloyd has been training with Galanis since 2003, and acknowledged that she suffered a dip in form during the 2009 WPS season without his assistance. That led to her becoming a free agent after Chicago decided not to pick up her option, something that immediately caught the eye of Sky Blue FC General Manager Gerry Marrone."You never know what's going to happen in the season after you win a championship...You always want to make your team stronger and deeper and I think we just did that with Carli Lloyd.Once the two parties began talking, the deal happened pretty quickly. It all came together within 24 to 36 hours and "it all worked perfectly," Marrone said.Lloyd joins the likes of Heather O'Reilly, Christie Rampone, Yael Averbuch, Kacey White and Natasha Kai, giving Sky Blue FC six players with U.S. Women's National Team experience. That is the most of any team in the league. That means all four starting midfielders for Sky blue FC could potentially be U.S. internationals, should Head Coach Pauliina Miettinen go with O'Reilly, White, Lloyd and Averbuch in the starting eleven.Either way, Lloyd said she is more fit than ever and just can't wait to get home."My heart is here back in New Jersey so this is where I want to be," she said.
