Washington Freedom 2-0 Atlanta Beat: Woes continue in A-Town |
|
|
The Washington Freedom topped the Atlanta Beat 2-0 Sunday at the Kennesaw State University Soccer Stadium behind goals from Abby Wambach and Lene Mykjaland.Mykjaland struck in the 28th minute after Wambach beautifully back-heeled the ball into her path. Mykjaland's shot beat a helpless Brett Maron in goal and the Beat found itself chasing a game yet again this season, this time early on.The goal came just minutes after the Freedom returned to full-strength. Sonia Bompastor missed almost 15 minutes of play while getting stitches in her head after a collision with Beat midfielder McCall Zerboni. The two players challenged each other for the 50-50 ball and their heads banged off of each other, opening a gash in Bompastor's head and sending Zerboni off the field in a stretcher."I went to win the ball in the air," said Bompastor. "I just remember I hit her, she hit me, and we went down. I was okay, though. Even when I went to the ground I was okay. I don't know how Zerboni is, but I am sorry that it happened."In the second half, Wambach would add a goal of her own to double the Freedom's advantage. In the 63rd minute, Wambach put the ball into the back of the net with a diving header off of Bompastor's cross. That was the final dagger for Atlanta as the Beat fell 2-0 at the hands of the Freedom in the second game-ever at KSU Soccer Stadium. The Beat's best chance of the half came in the 48th minute when Shelley Thompson sent her one-time shot just inches wide of net. Still, it was not enough for Atlanta.“We’re still struggling from the final pass, to the final touch, to the final cross,” Beat Head Coach Gareth O’Sullivan said. “It’s all about putting the ball in the net and we have been struggling to do that. We know that we’re going to give goals to top teams, but we have to score goals. We played a good game, but a lot of the shots we took were rushed.” Atlanta is still the only winless team in WPS, falling to 0-5-1 (1 point). |
