Boston Breakers 2-1 Philadelphia Independence: Boston ends nine game winless streak

The Boston Breakers earned their first win in almost three months Sunday when they defeated the Philadelphia Independence 2-1 on Independence Day in West Chester, Penn.

Captain Kristine Lilly scored her first goal of the season in the 84th minute to propel the Breakers to their first win since April 10, opening weekend.  Forward Lauren Cheney also scored her first goal since that April 10 match, which resulted in a 2-1 win over the Washington Freedom.

Philadelphia forward Amy Rodriguez opened the scoring in the 18th minute when she finished a volley of Lianne Sanderson's cross to put the home side up early.  The goal was the seventh of the season for the suddenly on-fire Rodriguez, but it was her first against her old team.

The match went to halftime with Philadelphia ahead 1-0, but that would not last long.  Cheney sent a shot past Independence goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc just one minute after halftime to equalize for Boston in scorching heat at West Chester University.

Boston would continue to press and Lilly found net in the 84th minute when she finished a through ball from fellow All-Star Kelly Smith.  The goal gave the Breakers a late win on the road against second place Philadelphia and Boston tasted victory for just the second time this season.

Next up for Boston (2-5-4, 10 pts.) is the Atlanta Beat at home Sunday, July 11 at 6 p.m.  Philadelphia (6-4-3, 21 pts.) does not play again until Saturday, July 17 at FC Gold Pride.
