When Washington Freedom goalkeeper Erin McLeod went down late in Saturday's 4-1 home loss to FC Gold Pride, she immediately grabbed her right now. On Wednesday, the Freedom confirmed the team's worst fears: McLeod tore her ACL and is out for the remainder of the season, as first reported by Craig Stouffer.
McLeod is expected to be out for the remainder of the 2010 calendar year and will have to set her sights on returning in time for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup. She is one of two top-notch options in goal for Canada along with Philadelphia Independence goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc.
Freedom goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris now takes over the starting job in Washington. Her first appearance of the season came in Wednesday's 3-2 loss on the road to Atlanta. The Freedom are now on a nine-game winless streak and four-game losing streak.
