The Boston Breakers exploded for three goals in five minutes early in the match to defeat the Chicago Red Stars 3-1 Sunday at Toyota Park.
Kelly Smith opened the scoring in the 9th minute when she dribbled through the Chicago back line and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Jillian Loyden. Just three minutes later, Lindsay Tarpley slotted Smith through behind the Red Stars defense and the English striker easily placed the ball past Loyden for her second goal of the match.
Then in the 14th minute, Ifeoma Dieke added to Chicago's shockingly poor start when she headed a free kick from Smith into the back of the net to put the Breakers up 3-0 early. The stretch was the second time this season that the Breakers put up three goals in five minutes, tying their own record for the fastest three successive goals in WPS history. Boston previously scored three goals in five minutes July 11 against the Atlanta Beat when Liz Bogus, Jordan Angeli and Smith each scored between the 49th and 54th minutes.
Chicago would have its chances and once the Red Stars settled into the match, they ended up out-shooting Boston 18-7 on the day. In the 26th minute, Chicago defender Whitney Engen sent a volley off the crossbar.
The Red Stars would get one back in the 80th minute when Kosovare Asllani redirected a Casey Nogeueira free kick into the back of the net, but Boston would prevail for a 3-1 win.
Boston (5-6-4, 19 pts.) has now won four of its last five matches and is suddenly in third place in WPS. Meanwhile, Chicago (4-7-5, 17 pts.) falls to fifth place after being leap-frogged by Boston.
