McLeod's right ACL torn, out for season

When Washington Freedom goalkeeper Erin McLeod went down late in Saturday's 4-1 home loss to FC Gold Pride, she immediately grabbed her right now.  On Wednesday, the Freedom confirmed the team's worst fears: McLeod tore her ACL and is out for the remainder of the season, as first reported by Craig Stouffer.


McLeod is expected to be out for the remainder of the 2010 calendar year and will have to set her sights on returning in time for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup.  She is one of two top-notch options in goal for Canada along with Philadelphia Independence goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc.

Freedom goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris now takes over the starting job in Washington.  Her first appearance of the season came in Wednesday's 3-2 loss on the road to Atlanta.  The Freedom are now on a nine-game winless streak and four-game losing streak.

Philadelphia Independence 3-0 Chicago Red Stars: Rodriguez on fire

Amy Rodriguez and Caroline Seger.  What more do you need to say?  The Philadelphia Independence defeated the Chicago Red Stars 3-0 Wednesday at West Chester University behind a brace from Rodriguez and another goal from Seger.  With the two goals, Rodriguez now has four in her last two games and 11 goals on the season.

Atlanta Beat 3-2 Washington Freedom: Skid now at nine games for Freedom

The Washington Freedom is now winless in nine-straight games after losing 3-2 to the Atlanta Beat Wednesday in Kennesaw, Ga.  It was also the Freedom's fourth-straight loss.

Johanna Rasmussen opened the scoring for Atlanta in the 20th minute when she beat Washington goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris, who made her WPS debut in place of injured Erin McLeod, who tore her ACL Saturday and is out for the season.

U-20 Women's World Cup semifinals set after surprises

The FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup enters the semifinal stage Thursday with one interesting and surprising group remaining. 

Hosts Germany are the favorites after defeating North Korea 2-0 Saturday.  Germany will take on South Korea in the first semifinal after the South Korean's dominated Mexico in a 3-1 win Sunday.

Meanwhile, Columbia advanced to the semifinals Saturday with an impressive 2-0 win over Sweden.  The South American's will face off with Nigeria, which shockingly topped the United States, the defending champion, 4-2 on penalty kicks after the match ended 1-1 after extra time.More

Chicago Red Stars 1-3 Boston Breakers: Smith leads Boston's offensive explosion

The Boston Breakers exploded for three goals in five minutes early in the match to defeat the Chicago Red Stars 3-1 Sunday at Toyota Park.

Kelly Smith opened the scoring in the 9th minute when she dribbled through the Chicago back line and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Jillian Loyden.  Just three minutes later, Lindsay Tarpley slotted Smith through behind the Red Stars defense and the English striker easily placed the ball past Loyden for her second goal of the match.

Washington Freedom 1-4 FC Gold Pride: Freedom winless in eight

FC Gold Pride defeated the Washington Freedom 4-1 Saturday at the Maryland SoccerPlex behind two goals each from Tiffeny Milbrett and Marta.  The loss makes the Freedom winless in its last eight matches.

Milbrett opened the scoring early for the visitors when she headed the ball past Freedom goalkeeper Erin McLeod in the 18th minute.  McLeod saved Milbrett's initial shot, but the rebound fell right to the savvy veteran for the easy tap-in.
