FC Kansas City down Pride, 2-0 for first win of 2016

Holders FC Kansas City finally put one in the win column for 2016, a 2-0 triumph over Orlando Pride on Saturday night at Swope Soccer Village. Second half goals by Yael Averbuch and Erika Tymrak helped snap a club record, six-match winless streak.

Tymrak helped set up the Averbuch goal when she was fouled by Becky Edwards about 35 yards from goal. Averbuch stepped into the free kick and it took an FCKC bounce off the Pride’s Lianne Sanderson and in for Averbuch’s second of the season.

Tymrak doubled the lead in the 77th with an assist from Katie Bowen. The rookie Bowen took the ball deep on the left side on a mismatch against Jamia Fields and found Tymrak wide open near the top of the 18. Tymrak dribbled toward the middle of the park, beating Kaylyn Kyle with her last touch, and curled a perfect shot inside the right post. It was Tymrak’s first goal of the season and FC Kansas City’s first in the run of play since Week 2.

Both teams went without their United States internationals which allowed some fresh faces to see the field. FC Kansas City gave rookie Alexa Newfield her first career start and Tiffany McCarty her first start in a Blues uniform. The Pride used Aubrey Bledsoe in goal.

FC Kansas City (1-4-2, 5 pts) exited last place and now sit ninth ahead of the Breakers. Following next weekend’s FIFA break the Blues return to action on Saturday, June 11 away to Sky Blue FC. The Pride (4-3-0, 12 pts) saw the end of their three-match win streak and are next at Western New York, also June 11.
