Sundhage names NJ camp roster

U.S. national team head coach Pia Sundhage named her roster for the latest training camp, which begins Thursday in Princeton, N.J.

Most of the faces are familiar to U.S. fans, but two interesting additions are goalkeeper Adriana Franch, who is entering her senior year at Oklahoma State University this fall, and 1.FFC Frankfurt defender Gina Lewandowski. Forward Christen Press, who participated in last month’s training camp in Florida, was not called into the New Jersey camp, likely due to club commitments with Göteborg FC in Sweden.

The squad of 28 Americans will train in Princeton from May 10-25 ahead of the May 27 match against China at PPL Park in Chester, Penn.

Here is the full roster:

GOALKEEPERS (5): Nicole Barnhart, Adrianna Franch, Ashlyn Harris, Jill Loyden, Hope Solo
DEFENDERS (10): Rachel Buehler, Stephanie Cox, Whitney Engen, Meghan Klingenberg, Amy LePeilbet, Gina Lewandowski, Heather Mitts, Kelley O’Hara, Christie Rampone, Becky Sauerbrunn
MIDFIELDERS (9): Shannon Boxx, Tobin Heath, Lori Lindsey, Carli Lloyd, Kristie Mewis, Heather O’Reilly, Megan Rapinoe, Amy Rodriguez, Keelin Winters
FORWARDS (4): Lauren Cheney, Sydney Leroux, Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach

I’d be surprised if Press wasn’t able to negotiate time off for national team commitments in her contract when she signed with Goteburg. Perhaps she didn’t think she was going to get the call-up and didn’t address it when signing on? Or perhaps she doesn’t want to miss club time to practice with the team only to find out that she didn’t make the final Olympic roster? You have to let Leroux be the first player off the bench to spell Wambach…but at some point, you have to give Press playing time too…she lights it up at the club level in Boca Raton and in Sweden.

Why is Cheney considered a forward? Isn’t she an attacking mid?

At this point, Cheney is best described as a utility player. She can really play anywhere in the front six. RE: Press…that could be. We’ll try to look into it.
