WPS has deducted one point from magicJack in the league standings for failure to meet minimum league standards on multiple occasions. Although magicJack’s record is 3-0-0, the team will now have eight points instead of nine due to the point deduction.
The deduction came as a result of the team’s third infractions for failure to properly display league sponsorship signage and failure to upload video to Match Analysis, the internal video system that the league uses for coaches to scout other teams. As Atlanta Beat Head Coach James Galanis said last week, “nobody’s seen anything.” Another coach called it downright “unfair” that there is such mystery surrounding the team.
Upon the first violations at the home opener on April 23 against the Boston Breakers, WPS warned the team and issued a fine. The second violation of non-compliance to upload match video (May 1) caused WPS to remove the team’s fourth round draft pick in 2012. Now, the third violation (May 8 ) means magicJack has lost a point in the standings and its third round draft pick n 2012 for non-compliance with the league’s on-site commercial activation and a third consecutive week without match video.
Sources confirm that a fourth violation would result in WPS revoking the team’s right to host a playoff game. The way magicJack has started the season, it certainly looks like the team is on pace to do that, although FAU Soccer Field is not suitable for a TV broadcast.
Although magicJack has hung the banners of league sponsors from fences that surround the field, they have not been displayed as on-field sign boards. There is still no match video on Match Analysis from any magicJack games. The team was also in violation of league policy when it did not make players or coaches available to media after a match.
